ABSTRACT: The novel strain causing the outbreaks of cholera like infection was clinically.morphologically and epidemiologically indistinguishable from Vihrio cholerae 01 serogroups. But it did not agglutinate with 01 antiserum or with antisera against any of 137 non-01 serogroups. Hence, given the name 0139 . cholerae 0139 possessed an epidemic potential as seen in cholera-like epidemics in Calcutta, India with 13,000 cases and 3.2% death, whereas in Bangladesh. it occu•red with 10.000 cases and 5% death, Both incidences took place during early period of 1993 .
