ABSTRACT:   P. malariae is the only human malarial parasite, which is associated with the development of nephrotic syndrome, thus its identification is of importance for the control and treatment of malaria as well as the prevention of subsequent nephrotic syndrome. The incidence of nephrotic syndrome in Myanmar is high and it accounts for 39-46% of the total admission in the Renal Unit of the Defense Services General Hospital, Mingaladon, Yangon, Myanmar (personal communication). P. malariae is prevalent in the neighboring countries like Thailand [1 and was also reported from the Shan State of the Union of Myanmar [2]. However, to our knowledge P. malariae was not reported from other parts of the country including the Mon Division.
SUBJECT HEADINGS:   Malaria, Plasmodium.
