ABSTRACT:   Epidemic outbreak of shigellosis [1] and water-borne typhoid fever in Catalonia in 1994 [2] highlight the effect of contaminated water. This study aims to demonstrate the water quality, which is consumed by local people. It was carried out in rural area, Kanbauk (Dawe) that includes Eindayazar, Phaungdaw, Pyingyi, Hlegone and Ohnbinkwin quarters, from January and November 1997. A total of 107 water samples from Kanbauk, (Dawe) and 23 rectal swab samples of diarrhoea cases from Ohnbinkwin were tested. Presumptive test for water quality was done as described in the guidance for drinking water quality [3]. Isolation and identification of enteric bacteria from rectal swab samples was done as described by WHO, 1981.
